This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of geochemistry. The book first lays out the ‘geochemical toolbox’: the basic principles and techniques of modern geochemistry, beginning with a review of thermodynamics and kinetics as they apply to the Earth and its environs. These basic concepts are then applied to understanding processes in aqueous systems and the behavior of trace elements in magmatic systems. Subsequent chapters introduce radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry and illustrate their application to such diverse topics as determining geologic time, ancient climates, and the diets of prehistoric peoples. The focus then broadens to the formation of the solar system, the Earth, and the elements themselves. Then the composition of the Earth itself becomes the topic, examining the composition of the core, the mantle, and the crust and exploring how this structure originated. A final chapter covers organic chemistry, including the origin of fossil fuels and the carbon cycle’s role in controlling Earth’s climate, both in the geologic past and the rapidly changing present. I am familiar with geochemistry since more than 35 years. Consequently, I certainly know several textbooks in the field. However, when I started to know the William M. White book "Geochemistry" years ago in its e-book format I immediately realized that there is no other equal book in the field. Few weeks ago, I decided to buy its paper printed copy via Amazon. I got it almost the next week, a marvelous text in hand anytime I'd like to consult it. It is rather close to be complete, so I have no hesitation to assign it the highest rating possible. I like its approach, the foundation of its thermodynamic and the kinetic toolboxes before going into the geological details and applications, and in particular I clearly admire its dealing with isotope geochemistry since no modern textbook on geochemistry would be interesting if it did not deal with environmental stable and radiogenic isotopes involvement in geology and the environment. I strongly recommend this book to all serious students, professors and research workers in environmental sciences, geology, water resources, chemistry, thermodynamics, isotope hydrology and geochemistry and for sure to those who are permanently involved with the practical geochemistry studies and the associated engineering / environmental problems. A great book indeed, I love it, I keep it all the time close to my work desk and at home. It is difficult to find any other comprehensive book that covers its field in its successful, its unique way, its high-standard quality, and the information this book provides.
Geochemistry by William White is an excelent review of the main themes in geochemistry. It is quite complete and goes through the different subjects with very clear and consistent expositions. As a geochemistry professor for more than 30 years I do recommend this book.
Good reference.
I have Just read the first chapter. So far the content of the book is excellent, rigorous yet clear, however, my major complain is that there are so many typos in the mathematical symbols and equations, such as lower case vs. upper case, subscript/superscript and hat/overbar,. Considering this book is quite mathematically-sophisticated, these typos make the reading sometimes confusing.
Thorough and up to date. The field has progressed along with advances in computer (thermodynamic) modeling and incorporation of rigorous physics, and texts more than 15 years old are a bit dated. Book does a good job of presenting both old and new.
This book is one of the few comprehensive geochem textbooks that is written for a 1st or 2nd year grad student! Very detailed explanation about concepts. Great illustrations and a concise synthesis at the end of each chapter.
Very good text for understanding the basic principles of geochemistry. Not too complicated or difficult to understand.
Great great book with good price.
